About the Department

Nanjing University’s Department of Foreign Languages (DFL) has roots that stretch back to a 1917 English curriculum. Building on this rich history, it’s become a leading center for language education, scholarly research, and international collaborations. Offering a comprehensive suite of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in seven languages—English, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Japanese, and Korean—the department is a powerhouse of linguistic study. Our faculty is exceptionally accomplished, with 80% holding doctorates and 60% serving as professors or associate professors. Currently, we educate around 700 undergraduates and over 600 postgraduate students. With robust ties to numerous prestigious universities across the globe, including institutions in the UK, the US, Russia, Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, Japan, and South Korea, DFL actively engages in and hosts a wide array of international initiatives, amplifying our global impact.

Qualifications

  1. Applicants must adhere to Chinese legal standards and demonstrate a strong commitment to both teaching and research.
  2. Candidates should possess impeccable academic and professional integrity, with no record of disciplinary action related to teaching or research ethics. A background check is mandatory.
  3. Applicants must be native speakers of English, German, or Spanish, holding a master’s degree or higher in literature, linguistics, or a related field in the humanities or social sciences. Preference is given to those with research aligned with our departmental focus areas: language and culture, literature, and area studies.
  4. Candidates should be skilled educators with excellent communication abilities, capable of delivering engaging undergraduate and graduate courses.
  5. A minimum of two years’ teaching experience at the university or language school level, either domestically or internationally, is required, with proven teaching excellence. Priority will be given to candidates holding assistant, associate, or full professorships from overseas universities.
  6. Generally, applicants should be under 55 years of age at the time of application (born after January 1, 1968). However, exceptional candidates may be considered regardless of age.

Compensation and Benefits

  1. The annual salary for full-time language instructors ranges from 130,000 to 200,000 yuan, adjusted based on prior teaching experience.
  2. The benefits package includes a monthly housing allowance and an international travel stipend, totaling between 35,000 and 50,000 yuan annually, depending on the applicant’s country of origin.
  3. On-campus university apartments are available for rent, with a fixed rental rate guaranteed throughout the contract period.
  4. Social insurance will be provided in compliance with Chinese laws. The university will also contribute to a housing fund, subject to agreement with the applicant.
